Volvo, which means "I Roll" in
Latin was incorporated in 1915 as a subsidiary of AB SKF, the Swedish ball
bearing manufacturer.
In 1924, Assar Gabrielsson, SKF sales manager and Björn Prytz, Managing Director
of SKF were the founders of Volvo. In 1926 they decided to start construction of
a Swedish car along with Gustaf Larson a Master of Mechanical Engineering.
The Volvo car company was born on April 14, 1927, when the first car, ÖV4
(nicknamed Jakob) left the factory The first production models were designed to
withstand the rigors of Sweden's rough roads and cold temperatures. This
emphasis on durability has been a feature of Volvo products ever since.
In the early years Volvo produced more trucks than cars as the poor roads in
Sweden at the time kept down the demand for cars.
After WWII Volvo unveiled one of its biggest successes, the PV444.
In 1955 Volvo ventured tentatively into the north-American market with the
PV444. They were told it will be like trying to sell refrigerators to Eskimos,
but Volvo soon proved that demand for cars like this did exist in the U.S.A.
The PV444, with its compact size and stylish looks helped the manufacturer
quickly make a name for itself.
The 1950's also saw Volvo as the first manufacture to equip their vehicles with
safety belts as standard fitting and the also the first to make vehicles with a
three-point safety belt.
In 1999 Volvo was sold to Ford Motor Company.
