Knock Sensor

A sensor mounted in the engine block that senses the type of vibrations given off by cylinder detonation (pinging). When the on-board computer sees signals from this sensor indicating detonation or pinging it retards ignition timing to try and eliminate the problem.Knock Sensor

This sensor is capable of picking up pinging even before it becomes audible to the ear. However, if it the computer is constantly retarding timing to prevent pinging, performance and mileage will suffer. This can lead people to think they can burn a lower octane or poor quality fuel just fine when it actually can be affecting the car.
