Crankshaft or Camshaft Position Sensor/CKP/CMP
Monitors the rotation and position of the engine and tells the computer exactly when to trigger the fuel injectors or the ignition spark. The crankshaft sensor tells the computer when #1 piston is at the top of the cylinder and the camshaft sensor tells the computer when the #1 is at the compression stroke of its revolution. This allows for better control of spark and fuel injection as well as determining whether an engine is misfiring. On cars with distributors, the camshaft sensor is usually in the distributor. Some cars use the same sensor for both camshaft and crankshaft.
