In October 1946, Soichiro Honda
established the Honda Technical Research Institute in Hamamatsu, Japan, to
develop and produce small 2-cycle motorbike engines. Two years later, Honda
Motor Company, Ltd. was born.
The first production automobile from Honda was the T360 mini pick-up truck
powered by a small 356 cc straight-4 gasoline engine.
The first production car from Honda was the S500 sports car released in 1963.
It's chain driven rear wheels points to Honda's motorcycle origins.
In 1970 that Honda imported its first automobile model, the little N600, in the
US.
In 1973 Honda has launched Civic in the US, the first Honda car to catch to the
American public and it was then that the company begun to witness larger and
larger sales
The Honda Civic offered enough interior space and it offered a significant fuel
efficiency that it soon became an American success. The world faced a fuel
crisis in the early 1980's and Civic was the vehicle US consumers wanted, as it
was inexpensive and it offered good gas mileage.
In 1986 Honda introduced the Acura brand to the U.S. market in an effort to
create a separate luxury division for its products. At first, it was just two
models: the Legend sedan, which was the first true Japanese luxury car sold in
America, and the Integra sport coupe and sedan.
The Acura brand was a marketing creation for the North American market as they
were not sold in Europe or Japan, only Hondas, the Acura brand was immediately
successful.
Consumers liked the features, performance and upscale image of Acura cars, along
with the fact that Acuras were backed by Honda's reputation for reliability and
low ownership costs.
