Probably the most famous car of all time is the Ford Model T (also known as the Tin Lizzie and Flivver).
It was produced by
Henry Ford's Ford Motor Company from 1908 through 1927.
Ford built 15,000,000 cars and trucks with the Model "T" engine. The only
other car to exceed that number was the Volkswagen Beetle.
The Ford Model T was named the world's most influential car of the twentieth
century in an international poll.

Henry Ford began his working life as a machinist, then became an engineer
with the Edison Illuminating Company. (He and Thomas Edison were close
friends for decades.)
Ford's first company was the Henry Ford Company on November 3, 1901, which
later became the Cadillac Motor Company August 22, 1902.
He then launched the Ford Motor Company in a converted factory in 1902 with
$31,000 in cash from twelve investors, most notably John and Horace Dodge,
who would later found the Dodge Brothers Motor Vehicle Company. The Ford
Motor Company would go on to become one of the largest and most profitable
companies in the world, as well as being one of the few to survive the Great
Depression.
Ford introduced the world's first moving assembly line in 1913 which reduced
chassis assembly time from 12½ hours in October to 2 hours 40 minutes and
boosted annual output to 202,667 units that year. After a Ford ad promised
profit-sharing if sales hit 300,000 between August 1914 and August 1915,
sales in 1914 hit 308,162, and 501,462 in 1915; by 1922, production would
exceed one million a year.
________
Lincoln, the luxury brand of Ford
Motor Company was founded In 1917 by Henry M. Leland, one of the founders of
Cadillac (which was originally the Henry Ford Company).
Leland named the brand after his longtime hero Abraham Lincoln.
He left Cadillac during World War I and formed the Lincoln Motor Company to
build Liberty aircraft engines with his son Wilfred. After the war, the
company's factories were retooled to manufacture luxury automobiles.
The company encountered financial troubles during the transition, and after
having produced only 150 cars in 1922, was forced into bankruptcy and sold
to the Ford Motor Company on February 4, 1922.
In 1923 several new body styles were introduced. and despite a limited
market appeal, sales rose about 45 percent to produce 7,875 cars and the
company was operating at a profit by the end of 1923.
________
Mercury was founded in 1939 by Edsel
Ford, Henry Ford's son to market entry-level-luxury cars slotted between
Ford-branded regular models and Lincoln-branded luxury vehicles.
The Mercury name came from Roman mythology as Mercury was the "messenger of
the gods". During its early years, the Mercury brand was known for
performance.
The Mercury brand will be phased out in 2010, while
Ford Motor Company will focus on the Ford and Lincoln brands.
